What exactly is a true woman of the nineties? We immediately think of a
successful career woman-sexy, confident, and creative, able to balance her
work with family, with the possible help from a few nips, tucks, and dyes
here and there.
MARINA is just that. The dyed-blonde, feline, pop-songstress is relentless.
She is a poster-business owner, poster-mommy, poster-babe, and a poster-talent.
She has noticed that the music her kids are listening to, i.e. dance music,
is of the same breed as the music she danced to at the raging Studio 54 back
in the day. As a result, she's chosen Europop as her medium. It communicates
clearly and cross-generationally. It's on the radio. And it's honest.
MRK Records is exactly what she and her husband/business partner Roy Kamen
needed to create in order to suit MARINA's diverse talents in production,
songwriting, and musicianship. MARINA is a violinist, a keyboardist,
a classically trained singer, a dancer, a choreographer, and more. Her gift is
being able to take a genre like Europop and conform it to create songs that
express a story, with diverse orchestration, and the promise for an astounding
live performance.
"Generally speaking, the only world where a woman is allowed to be a
storyteller is in folk and rock music!", MARINA explains.
"Sometimes dance music doesn't cross over because it's pigeonholed as fluff."
MARINA is propitiously nurturing her sound, and has produced several of her
singles so far with MRK Records. By a twist of fate, she was introduced to
keyboardist Tony Marinello, formerly of the legendary Bobby O's camp
(Divine, Pet Shop Boys, The Flirts, Shep Pettibone,
Jellybean Benitez, etc.), who now acts as associate producer on many of her
projects. Her first single, "Ti Amo" (with Flambe), a cover of the
famous Italian love song, was released on Valentine's Day 1997, marking the launch
of MRK Records.
Her subsequent releases "Do Ya Wanna Dance?" (featuring rapper Kraze),
"The Silent Night", and "Rocket To Your Heart",
have received considerable attention and established MRK in the world of Europop.
Next on the MRK agenda was a no-holds-barred 3-title project called the
Dream Lover EP, including MARINA's "Dream Lover",
"Um-Lotty-Da", and a cover of Jewel's "Foolish Games"
(featuring an extra-special string arrangement a la MARINA). The EP was
released in late January 1998.
Marina started dance at 4, added violin and piano at age 7, and then
went on to study opera and violin at the prestigious Manhattan School of
Music. She pursued a career as a singer/dancer/actress, supplementing her
income by teaching aerobics at Body Design By Gilda. She met her partner
for life, recording engineer Roy Kamen, at The Music House, a major
music/audio production studio in NYC. Soon the two launched their own studio,
Kamen Entertainment Group, Inc., which opened in 1987. Over the years,
Marina has written, cast, and produced thousands of commercials,
often doing voiceovers and jingles for companies including Snicker's Ice
Cream, Footlocker, Coty Stetson, Cherry Coke and VH1. This unique
opportunity allows Marina to work with some of the best studio musicians,
singers, and actors that New York City has to offer. The best part is at the
end of the day; she goes home to her three beautiful children, ages 6, 8 and 13.
Marina released a single called "Sisters Are Doin’ It For Themselves", in January 1999.
"Sisters Are Doin’ It For Themselves" is a cover of an Eurythmics song.
Marina finally released her debut album entitled "Um Lotty Da" on
December 1, 1999 (Internet release) and on January 15, 2000 (Record Stores).
On July 1, 2000 Marina released an album called "Under Her Covers".
This album contains classic songs in pure Marina style.
In 2001 Marina released a single called "Mumbo Jumbo", an album
called "The Mixes" was also released.
2003: Has a high-nrg fitness show called "Sing Off The Pounds".
