Ricky Simmonds and Stephen Jones are the duo currently known in the dance industry as the Space Brothers, though there is a chance you might have heard their music under a variety of other pseudonyms. In fact so many different imprints were snapping their product up at one point, you'd have had to be spotter of the year to recognise even half of them. Over the past four years they have signed ten deals with ten different lables which include Ascension on Perfecto, Essence on Innocent and Lustral on Hooj Choons.
This leads us neatly into the first chapter in the Space Brothers story. After being inspired by
a suitably cinematic Oakenfold mix, Ricky and Stephen later headed into the studio.
The result was their moodiest slice of vinyl to date,
the superlative "I Am" by Chakra,
which finally surfaced on the Jackpot imprint.
A madly prolific production period then followed which saw the Brothers re-focus their creative attentions. As Stephen puts it: "we completely changed our outlook from this period. We decided to make music straight from the heart, and not tailor it for any particular market. We focused our efforts into the work we were doing as Space Brothers. We made it our main project with Manifesto as our primary home. You could say we found ourselves at last."
If you've heard the Space Brothers two hit twelves on Manifesto to date, "Shine" and "Forgiven", you'll most definitely agree. These are the pumping hits with substance which convinced Manifesto that the time was right for a Space Brothers album. So, an album of 10 pumping club cuts is on the cards, then boys? "Er, no." explains Ricky. "Like we said, we wanted to make music from the heart, and 10 club tunes would have sounded just like any old compilation album. What we decided to do, after a particularly relaxing time in Thailand at Christmas, was to make one CD of horizontal house and add to it another CD of club remixes of the same tunes. In other words, 20 tracks in original and remix form on the same double album.".
Hardly anyone, since the heady days of Jam & Spoon's genre-defining "Triptomatic Fairytales", has attempted a project this big. For starters, the horizontal house disc looks likely to be an instant Ibiza classic, and with remixers like Medway, Matt Darey and Lange on the second disc, the dancefloor headstrong will be sonically sated in an altogether more in-yer-face way. Now add Mr Oakenfold to the equation - he has blessed the project and agreed to mix the second CD in the style of his, now classic, Goa mix - and whichever way you look at it, you've got a monster hit on your hands.
The Realm released the track "This Is Not A Breakdown" on February 4th, 2002.
Ascension released the single "For A Lifetime" on March 11th, 2002. "For A Lifetime" features the glorious vocals of the luscious Erin Lordan, who has recently started collaborating with Ascension.
Lustral released the single "Broken" on November 25th, 2002.
Chakra released a single called "Doors" on January 20th, 2003.
Space Brothers released the 12" "One More Chance" on November 12, 2003.
Space Brothers released the 12" "Forgiven 2005" in February 2005.
Space Brothers released the 12" "Everywhere I Go" in the UK on November 11, 2005.
